Harvey
said that the new Red Cross program will also include an increased emphasis
on water safety and drowning prevention in all levels of the curriculum.
Instructors will be given tools and exercises to incorporate water safety
skills into their classes that are appropriate for various ages.
Harvey also announced that the new Water Safety Instructor’s Manual is being significantly revised to make it easier for instructors to effectively teach all levels of Learn-to-Swim. The manual and accompanying CD-ROM will provide sample lesson plans that can be customized to meet the needs of a facility; as well as detailed explanations of all the skills associated with each level of the Swimming and Water Safety program.
“We want to make it easier for water safety instructors to understand and implement what they are expected to teach for each level,” said Harvey. “We also believe that this new structure will help instructors be more comfortable with teaching multiple levels of the program, which will give managers more flexibility in scheduling and substituting their staff members.”
